On Monday, the Marine Math and Science Academy (MMSA) basketball team Defeated Nobel Street-Pritzker 67-63 in an IHSA regional contest held at Marshall Metropolitan High School. With this win the MMSA basketball team improves to 14-11 on the season and will get to play Marshall in the 2nd round of the state tournament on Tuesday, March 2nd at 6:00.

Antwon Durham ’12 had 29 points and 8 rebounds and Joshua Lazare ‘11 chipped in with 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. With stats like these you would think the MMSA team had an easy victory, but this was not the case.

With an 11 point lead at the half, MMSA went into the second half with all of the momentum. However, midway through the fourth quarter the Bulldogs found themselves down by 12. Pritzker went to a full court press in the second half which helped launch the comeback.

“I felt disappointed. I feel that we could have done better job in the third quarter then what we did, also I felt that we gave them the lead,” said MMSA head coach Roosevelt Singleton.

With the season on the line MMSA gave Pritzker some of their own medicine, initiating a full court press of their own. Steals by Luther Dean ’11 and Alfonte Curtis ’12 led to easy buckets on the other end and before you knew it the Bulldogs led by two points with time running down. With 10 seconds left on the clock, Timothy Hunter ‘13 was able to get to the free-throw line and make his 2 free-throw to put the nail in the coffin.

“There was pressure being on the line with season and game on the line but I was confident,” Hunter said.

The Bulldogs will now face off against Marshall, one of the top teams in the state and 2010 city-runner up. The game is at Marshall High School and tickets cost $4.
