MMSA finishes year with their best overall performance

By Myesha Evans '12

On May, 1, 2010 the Marine Math & Science Academy Drill Team competed in the Eisenhower Drill Meet. The competition took place in Blue Island, IL at Dwight D Eisenhower High School. MMSA‘s drill team & unarmed drill team performed very well, but would it be good enough for their goal: Best Overall Unit?

MMSA drill cadets were very motivated and dedicated in preparing for the meet. With all the lectures and practices the cadets put in, the instructors had faith that they could place in the competition. Instructor Sgt. Major said “When you believe that you can do something, that’s the first step in accomplishing it.”

The Drill Team competed in the following six events: Armed Platoon, Inspection, Armed & Unarmed Exhibition guided by Lt. Col Luis Tellez ‘11, Armed Squad guided by 1st Lt Clavas Baugh ‘12, and Color Guard conducted by 1st Sgt Alejandro Morales ‘12. All Drill Team members performed very well in all six events. “Waking up early in the morning everyday paid off on May 1, 2010. Thanks to all the drill team members and Gunnery Sgt Bibbs who put lots of hard work into our drill team” said Lt. Col Tellez.

Hardware was brought home by several of MMSA’s specialized teams. 1st place finishes were won by the Color Guard, Inspection and Platoon Exhibition. 2nd place finishes were won in the Squad Armed Drill and Platoon Armed Drill. “We got it all this year. MMSA cadets’ really showed improvement in this competition” said GySgt Bibbs.

The Unarmed drill team performed very well but did not place. The unarmed drill team now knows what they need to improve on to place next year. Drill team member Briana Brown said “The competition was very difficult but MMSA had been practicing for a long amount of time and practice brings success.” With more work on their drills, the unarmed drill team can place in the next upcoming drill meet.

With all of their top finishes, the MMSA Drill Team got what they were looking for: Best Overall Unit among 14 high schools coming from as far as Davenport, Iowa. Congratulations to the Drill Team on an outstanding year. (You can find pictures from the meet under the photo album icon on marinemilitary.org)
